The Real Thing was Faith No More’s third album, but the first to
feature the line-up of Mike Bordin (drums), Roddy Bottum
(keyboards), Bill Gould (bass), Jim Martin (guitars), and Mike
Patton (vocals).

The album was incredibly diverse, yet every song was linked by
the band’s own developing style. It peaked at #11 on the charts
and was certified platinum, spawning the singles, From Out Of
Nowhere and Falling To Pieces, as well as Epic, which was
ubiquitous on radio and MTV.

“Grumpy” gamle gadedrenge af den flabede stoebning

Bedre sent end aldrig har jeg her fet den
fornoejelse at skulle anmelde den Koebenhavnske
kvartet, Grumpynators og deres debutalbum,
Wonderland. Og en fornoejelse er det sgu’, for de
fire flabede, fuldmodne gadedrenge fyrer den fandeme
af, som var der intet andet at tage sig til p denne
jord. Det vender jeg tilbage til.

Fra Barnyard Rumble til First Five med Volbeat

Grumpynator blev dannet i januar 2011, og der gik
ikke lang tid, foer bandet havde fet stablet nok
sange p benene til at bevaege sig ud i det danske
land. Deres foerste koncert kom allerede i hus kun et
halvt r efter bandets oprindelse p
undergrundsfestivalen, Barnyard Rumble, og siden hen
er det blevet til en del koncerter p bde mindre
spillesteder rundt omkring, men ogs som support for
blandt andet Magtens Korridorer p deres forrs-
turne i 2012 og Volbeat p deres “First Five” tour i
2013.

Double bass in Wonderland

To Ep’er skulle det blive til, foer Grumpynators
signede med danske Target Records, og nu er de s
klar med deres foerste full-length album ved navn
Wonderland. Og der er heldigvis masser at glaede sig
over p denne debut, for de fire garvede musikere,
Christian (guitar),

Emil (guitar og vokal), Per Fisker (trommer) og
Jakob (kontrabas), der i oevrigt tidligere har vaeret
en del af enten Taggy Tones eller Volbeats
besaetning, formr p sikker vis at blande en lettere
punket hardrock med flere metalliske elementer samt
rockabilly p de i alt 11 sange, der er at finde p
Wonderland. Alle ovennaevnte genrer er repraesenteret,
men isaer rockabilly-genren synes vaerd at naevne i
form af Jakobs bde stilrene og virkeligt vellydende
kontrabas, der faktisk i sidste ende goer hele
forskellen. De mange stilarter til trods gr der
ikke laenge, foer man sidder og tapper let med foden
til isaer de dybe toner, og foer man ved af det, fr
man sgu’ lyst til en hel svingom i selskab med
Grumpynators.

Motoerhead moeder motorbilly

Stilen, som bandet selv betitler “motorbilly” er som
tidligere naevnt inspireret af bde punk, hardrock,
metal og rockabilly, og inspirationerne synes lige
s mange. Sangskrivnings-maessigt ligger de nok et
sted mellem det tidlige Disneyland After Dark (nu
D.A.D.) og Magtens Korridorer, men der er ogs plads
til de mere alvorlige metalpassager samt en hel del
Motoerhead at spore i form af isaer forsanger Emils
aggressive vokal. Om man bryder sig om Lemmys
karakteristiske “meget-gale-mand-p-en-bar” vokal,
er jo en smagssag, men er man fan af den brogede
englaender, er der den danske accent til trods helt
sikkert ogs meget godt at hente i Emils rustne og
mindst lige s hidsige sangpraestation.

Massiv metallisk vellyd og charmerende spradebasse-
vokal

Ved foerste indtryk minder sangene mske en smule om
hinanden, men alligevel formr bandet hele tiden at
iklaede dem nok personlighed til, at man fr lyst til
at hoere den naeste sang. Og nr foerst man bevaeger sig
lidt laengere ind i Grumpynators univers, er musikken
bde varieret og yderst velakkompagneret, og hele
produktionen er desuden pakket ind i massiv, hrdt
rockende og metallisk vellyd. Soloerne leveret af
Christian er rendyrket

rock’n’roll, mens Pers trommer er bde veludfoerte og
taktfaste, og sammen med Emils charmerende
spradebasse-vokal og Jakobs umiskendelige basspil,
fr man ganske enkelt lyst til at drikke sig
abefuld, mens man mosher rundt p dansegulvet, som
var der ingen i morgen. Og allerhelst i selskab med
disse fire fuldblods-rock’n’rollere.

Forrygende debut med plads til sm justeringer

Lidt finpudsning af Grumpynators sound og sm
justeringer hist og her er der heldigvis stadig
plads til p denne debut, og personligt kunne jeg
godt taenke mig en dansksproget version af albummet
samt en lidt mere loessluppen produktion. Men nr alt
kommer til alt, har Grumpynators med Wonderland
faktisk formet at lave et album, der er intet
mindre end forrygende, og jeg sender derfor 8
rapkaeftede kranier i deres retning.

Surfing with the Alien belongs to its era like Are You Experienced? belongs to its own — perhaps it doesn’t transcend its time the way the Jimi Hendrix Experience’s 1967 debut does, but Joe Satriani’s 1987 breakthrough can be seen as the gold standard for guitar playing of the mid- to late ’80s, an album that captures everything that was good about the glory days of shred. Certainly, Satriani was unique among his peers in that his playing was so fluid that his technical skills never seemed like showboating — something that was somewhat true of his 1986 debut, Not of This Earth, but on Surfing with the Alien he married this dexterity to a true sense of melodic songcraft, a gift that helped him be that rare thing: a guitar virtuoso who ordinary listeners enjoyed.
Nowhere is this more true than on “Always with Me, Always with You,” a genuine ballad — not beefed up with muscular power chords but rather sighing gently with its melody — but this knack was also evident on the ZZ Top homage “Satch Boogie” and the title track itself, both of which turned into rock radio hits. This melodic facility, plus his fondness for a good old-fashioned three-chord rock, separated Satriani from his shredding peers in 1987, many of whom were quite literally his students. But he was no throwback: he equaled his former students Steve Vai and Kirk Hammett in sweep picking and fretboard acrobatics and he had a sparkling, spacy quality to some of his songs — particularly the closing stretch of the Middle Eastern-flavored “Lords of Karma,” the twinkling “Midnight,” and “Echo” — that was thoroughly modern for 1987. The production of Surfing with the Alien is also thoroughly of its year — stiff drumbeats, sparkling productions — so much so that it can seem a bit like a relic from another era, but it’s fine that it doesn’t transcend its time: it captures the best of its era and is still impressive in that regard.

`:Prog mit viel Gitarrenhexerei, Keyboardgedudel und :’
`:expressivem Falsettgesang, der darf sich erstmal selbst :’
`:einliefern lassen. Wie bereits angedeutet liefern die :’
`:Vollzeitproleten 9MM wenig subtilen Rock mit dicken :’
`:Gitarren, einer fetten Produktion und Texten, die – um mit :’
`:Admiral Bensons Worten zu sprechen – teilweise so flach :’
`:sind, “dass Ameisen sofort Eier legen”. :’
`: :’
`:”Wir machen keinen Kuschelrock, wo die Olle dabei flennt!” :’
`:In der Tat, Kuschelrock ist das hier Gebotene nicht, eher :’
`:klingen 9MM wie eine unheilige Allianz von den ONKELZ und :’
`:CHROME DIVISION. Hier und da schauen noch die TOTEN HOSEN, :’
`:MOTORJESUS und seltener auch TANKARD um die Ecke. Letztere :’
`:werden vor allem aufgrund des sehr an Thrash erinnernden :’
`:Gesangs ins Gedchtnis gerufen. “Nitro Killers” ist eine :’
`:ziemlich geradlinige Angelegenheit. Nach dem stimmungsvollen’
`:Intro gibt es nur eine Richtung: Mit Volldampf nach vorne. :’
`:Dabei sind 9MM immer genau dann am besten, wenn sie schnelle’
`:und harte, fast schon thrashige Stahlmantelgeschosse vom :’
`:Schlage des Titeltracks oder “Extremisten” abfeuern. :’
`: :’
`:”Der Nachbar fllt tot um vor Schreck!” 9MM wollen laut :’
`:gehrt werden. Erst dann kommt “Nitro Killers” so richtig :’
`:zur Geltung. Allerdings kommen dann auch die Schwchen von :’
`:”Nitro Killers” umso deutlicher zum Tragen. Wie eingangs :’
`:erwhnt sind die Texte nicht gerade subtil. Gegen Ende der :’
`:Scheibe erreicht der Kse-Faktor aber ungeahnte Hhen, :’
`:sodass man sich irgendwann noch verschmt an den Kopf :’
`:greift. Man sprt deutlich, wie den Jungs das Textmaterial :’
`:ausgegangen ist. Wer “Denunzianten” und “Geiselwind” hren :’
`:kann, ohne dabei die Miene zu verziehen, muss knallhart im :’
`:Nehmen sein. Oder aber selbst auf dem Niveau von 9MM. :’
`: :’
`:”Extremisten und Faschisten, was tut Ihr uns leid! Ihr :’
`:Meinungs-Anarchisten, nur Gott Euch jetzt verzeiht!” Arrgh!:’
`:Und die Reime sind holprig! Das wird erstmals bei “300 :’
`:Mnner” deutlich, welches sich – Ueberraschung – auf die von’
`:Frank Miller respektive Zack Snyder so schn stilisierte und’

`:Genre wird es ausreichen, anspruchsvolle Metaller sollten in’
`:jedem Falle die oben erwhnten Hits anchecken. 9MM haben ein’
`:unterhaltsames Album mit einigen Schwchen abgeliefert, das:’
`:zwar keine hohen Wellen schlagen wird, aber dennoch – fr :’
`:das, was es sein will – hrenswert ist. :’
